George Saunders

February 12, 2013

George Saunders is a bestselling author, winner of the McArthur Fellowship (sometimes referred to as the “genius grant”), and has other honors as well.

I strongly recommend two of his essays, neither long.  The Braindead Megaphone, and Thought Experiment, both published in his collection of essays also titled The Braindead Megaphone, and probably available elsewhere, as well.  Both are clearly written, interesting and stimulating.  Each deals with important matters that are not, in themselves, political, but which could have political implications.  They’re essays.  No car chases, no lustful behavior, no cursing.  Also no pandering.  They’re not obscure.  They are, in fact, the opposite.  Clarity surely is a characteristic of good writing.

I wish I could think of some exciting thing to write that would hurry you towards Mr. Saunders’ writing.  Maybe I should tell you there’s lots of sex in it.  But there isn’t.
